Did you know up to 90% of the organic search traffic come to a business website through its blog?
More than 2 million WordPress blog posts are published each day (that is, 24 posts each second!). That is the power of blog writing in today’s digital world. Even with a large number of blogs being published, blog writing is still a skill that has its own learning curve along with its challenges.
Here we articulate five steps that you can follow to write a simple but engaging blog post.
Step 1: Plan your blog
Before you start to write a blog, spend some time planning on the blog topic and develop a quick outline of the post. The outline of your blog need not be lengthy, just a summary of sections that you plan to include in your blog post. Identify the target audience for whom you are writing the blog, along with the main points that you want your reader to take from your website contents.
Blog planning also includes doing ample research on the topic that you have selected and making a list of all the websites that you plan to refer to during the writing process.
Step 2: Draft an appealing blog title
As a first-time (or experienced) blogger, your next step is to draft a short but appealing blog title or headline that can attract the attention of any online reader.
For example, if you are writing about vintage muscle cars, you can use tools like Hubspot to generate catchy headlines as shown below.
Step 3: How to write a blog
After planning your blog topics and writing a good heading, it is time to create a blog post. Depending on your comfort factor, you can either choose to complete the first draft in a single writing session or write individual sections in parts. If you are in the right writing mode, it is probably better to write the complete blog in a single writing session.
As most readers scan through even the best of blogs, adding a number of subheadings with relevant titles can keep your reader engaged and keep them lured to your article when they feel like leaving.
Step 4: Add images and screenshots
Did you know that blog posts with an image every 75 to 100 words can double the number of social media shares?
Images can break up the monotony of continuous text while making the post visually appealing at the same time. Images can also be used to inject humour into a serious blog topic or making the article easier to understand.
Step 5: Edit your blog
The final step after writing your blog is to edit the blog. Editing is simply not just correcting your spelling or grammar. Read through your blog to check the flow of ideas and content. Check for words that do not add much value to your blog and remove (or replace) these words.
Ask your friends or colleagues to read your blog and ask for their honest feedback.
Although there is no such thing as a flawless blog, you can use the following tips to write a simple but equally appealing blog. These steps can be equally effective irrespective of the type of blog that you are writing including informative articles, listicles, or even a personal narrative.
Include these tips in your next blog and let us know how it works out for you.
